End of Winter Skills & WML Prep day

25th February 2015

Today was the last day of the CAG/ Pure Outdoor 5 day winter skills course. The participants certainly experienced challenging conditions during their course, reinforcing the need to have solid winter skills when in the Scottish mountains. The weather improved today which we all enjoyed, and we were barely aware of any breeze after the previous few days!

Also out today were Stuart and Jon. Stuart is working towards his Winter Mountain Leader Award and spent the day with Jon refining his techniques.

Winter Skills & Avalanche Training

22nd Feb 2015

Saturday was definitely the better day of the weekend as today, Sunday, has been wild with really strong winds and driving snow. Conditions yesterday were perfect for cramponing and sliding, however after the today's snow it will be all change, likely with a much higher avalanche risk.

Yesterday Chris and friends from Aberdeen were over for an avalanche training day. As experienced skiers and snowboarders, they were keen to improve their knowlegde of avalanches and their triggers.

Teasdale & Weardale Mountain Rescue Team spent the weekend brushing up their winter skills and looking at some scenarios with Jon and Nick. Today conditions were certainly testing!

Also on yesterday was a one day Intro to Winter Walking and the start of a five day Pure Outdoor/ CAG winter skiils course with Luke and Dave.

Great conditions & the end of a busy week

20th February 2015

First of all, a massive thank you to those who've been out with us this week. It's really appreciated and well done for surviving the weather.

It started off pretty wild and warm this week, but our teams still made the most of conditions. Yesterday and today we were rewarded with much, much better conditions.

Out with us in past week have been a winter skills team, a Cotswold Outdoors winter skills team, two family winter skills days (womenfolk one day and menfolk the other), returning client Matt and friends out climbing and winter skillsing, and Rod who's been preparing for his Everest North Col expedition. It would almost be time to relax if it wasn't about to start all over tomorrow again.

With the melt freeze we had this week, conditions for climbing in the Northern Corries are very good. We were climbing today (for fun rather than work) and enjoyed a lean but icy Broken Gully. Conditions look good over the weekend although it will likely be busy.

Winter Skills, Skiing & Mountaineering

17th February 2015

Last weeks perfect weather broke just in time for February half term! Fortunately it takes more than some adverse weather to dampen the participants spirits on the various courses running at the moment. Despite the strong winds and fluctuating temperatures, there have been periods of sunshine which have helped keep moral high.

Over the weekend Jo and Dean had their final day of their trip on A'Chailleach with Ross, refreshing winter skills and bagging a Munro in the process. Jon and Matt had a couple of days with Luke, again brushing up on winter skills and enjoying being in the mountains. Our winter skills team, on a five day course, have been dodging the weather and making the most of the breaks, including a navigation day yesterday on Cairn Gorm. Mark and the skiers had a day in Lurchers, a day hiding in the trees and a day on Sgorr Goaith.

Also this week, Mark is out with his sons on a Mountaineering course, whilst Crispin and family freinds are having a couple days of winter skills.

Although unsettled at the moment, it looks as though the weather is will turn colder from Thursday and the winds will ease.

Winter Climbing, Cairngorms

13th February 2015

Day two for Jo and Dean on their mini-multi activity trip and they climbed Aladinn's Couloir with Graeme in Coire an t'Sneachda. The weather returned to 'Scottish' conditions today, no need for suncream. They found good conditions for climbing and took it impressively in their stride!

Winter Navigation & Ski Touring

12th February 2015

The glorious weather continues in the Cairngorms and winter is certainly making up for last years wild conditions.

Paul came out with us for a day this week to brush up on his navigation skills. As a keen climber he wanted to know what to do at the end of a route to get home safely! For the next few days, Jo and Dean are up for some skiing, climing and walking. Today they skied Lurchers Gully and made light work of the variable snow conditions considering it had been two years since they were last on skis.

Jacob's Ladder, Winter Climbing

9th February 2015

It would be very easy to get used to these Alpine conditions with blue skies and a good snow covering! There was some nice neve to climb in Jacob's Ladder today and it looked as though there was some nice ice in other parts of the corrie too. It felt pretty warm on the tops, but who cares when it's so sunny!

Walking, Climbing & Skiing Cairngorms

7th February 2015

A busy spell with the start of half term.  We have four courses running; winter skills, intro to winter walking, intro to ski mountaineering, and a private winter climbing course.

The weather today wasn't quite as good as yesterday's wall to wall sunshine, but conditions on the hill were still really good for our walking and climbing teams. The climbers reported excellent conditons in Spirral Gully although hard going, Scottish conditions as ice and snow was being blasted off them! The skiers enjoyed skiing some hard-packed conditions too!

Avalanche CPD & Attempted Winter Climbing

5th Feb 2015

Today Derek delivered an avalanche training day for us which was an excellent opportunity to impove our understanding of the snowpack and how avalanches are triggerd.

Yesterday we skied into Geal Charn with a view of climbing some ice falls that we hoped would be in condition. Sadly they were burried under snow, so after an explore about hoping to find some ice we gave up and enjoyed our ski tour instead.

The forecast continues to look good for this weekend, which is another busy one for us with winter skills, climbing and skiing courses on.

Better conditions today

1st feb 2015

It was a much better day than forecasted with lighter winds, although it was still bitterly cold. The conditions worked well for out different teams. Our walking team enjoyed sunshine and snow shoes on Carn Ban Mor while the winter skills team navigated in poor visibility conditions on Cairn Gorm. The skiers also enjoyed sunshine and fresh snow.

Reports of good climbing in the Northern Corries today as well, although care is needed on some unstable approach slopes.
