End of Winter

4th Apr 2016

The end of winter, well kind of! That's the last of our winter courses finished, but it's still wintry up the mountains. It's been a great season and we're very, very grateful to the 348 wonderful people who chose to book a winter adventure with us.

Here are a few snaps from our last week of winter. Rich and Mel joined us for four days of guided ski touring, we finished off a winter skills course then started another, Reach-Out from Aberdeen went on a three day camping expedition around Glenmore Forest, Debbie enjoyed the Glen Feshie Munros, Adam and Amy climbed Ledge Route on Ben Nevis, Andrew climbed Flutted Buttress Direct, and Paddy and David enjoyed a three day Intro ski touring course!

The temperature is forecast to come down which will bring the easier winter routes into good condition, and walking in the mountains still requires all your winter skills!

Easter in the 'Gorms

27th Mar 2016

Winter hasn't quite finished with the Cairngorms yet! After a fairly warm and pleasant spell, it has turned cold again with a wintry forecast this week ahead with snow down to about 300m's!

Conditions have remained good for walking, spring skiing and climbing on the lower graded winter routes, and this next spell of weather should tide us over nicely into April.

On Friday it was great to have James and Andrea back for a ski touring refersher day. Over the weekend, we've had mountaineering, two winter skills, an avalanche awarness teams all out. Yesterday's weather was pretty horrific, so well done to the folks who endured it, and as such there is a distinct lack of photographs! Today was much better though.

We've also had Inverness Backcountry Snowsports Club for a weekend of Advanced Ski Mountaineering. It's great to be able to offer some coaching to a really active, good and nice bunch of ski tourers.

This week ahead we've got some winter climbing action, guided ski touring and camping exped all running. As per usual, more regular photos are on our Facebook page.

Loads of sunshine!

19th March 2016

Warm days and cold nights have given us some great mountain conditions, with gully lines full of hard neve and soft spring snow on the tops. The last couple days there has been a cloud and temperature inversion too, which is great when you're above the clouds but annoying if lower down! There's a real feeling of Spring in the air at the moment, but it's too early to let your winter guard down!

Wednesday was the final day of Enrico and Gordon's five day Introduction to Winter Climbing course. They got lots of climbing done during their course and on the final day were on the sharp end, leading routes of the Mess of Pottage.

It's been great to have Russ back with us for a couple of days. He and Zac climbed an icy Aladinns Couloir on Friday and today he enjoyed a nav and winter skills day with Luke.

We also have two winter mountaineering teams, a winter climbing and avalanche awareness course on this weekend. All teams headed above the clouds to enjoy the sunshine.

Here are some snaps....

Walking, Ski Touring & Climbing in the 'Gorms

13th March 2016

We had some really great weather during last week with lots of fresh snow, cold temperatures and stable high pressure. Our five day Intro ski touring course finished on Wednesday with the team taking themselves up A'Challiach near Newtonmore. It was another really good ski touring course that the team really enjoyed and learnt lots from. We managed some personal skiing too on Wednesday over in Glen Coe, where the weather and snow cover were just perfect. On Thursday we headed out as well with a ski tour up Braeriach, again the weather and conditions were pretty much as good they get! There's a short film of our ski on our Facebook page.

The weather broke just ahead of the weekend but this didn't affect our teams too much. Returning clients and accomplished mountaineers*, Suzie and Katie, climbed Jacob's Edge yesterday where climbing conditions were good, Enrico and Gordon started their 5 day Intro Winter Climbing course with an ascent of Hidden Chimney yesterday and Central Gully today (which they led themselves!), and our winter skills weekend team had a day in the Northen Corries and a day on Sgorr Goaith today.

Good conditions in the Cairngorms

7th March 2016

The weather last week was a little bit mixed following a spell of great weather at the end of February. Today however it was another cracker in the Cairngorms and days like today make it all worth while!

Since our last blog we've continued to be busy delivering various winter courses. We've had a couple of private winter skills courses, an Introduction to Winter Walking, Adam and Rebecca booked us for some guided climbing, a five day Introduction to Ski Touring course has started and Romain has been back out with us again for some more guided climbing.

As per usual the photographs show what we've been up to, and more regular photo updates are on our Facebook page.
