Norway skiing & snow back home

29th April 2015

There is an impressive amount of snow on the Cairngorms at the moment which was a surprise to see after returning home yesterday.

We've been working in Norway for Fire Trail Events. We were mainly mountain biking but managed some personal hill walking and ski touring.

We've got climbing and navigation courses coming up but perhaps one last ski tour is in order.......

Cairngorm Exped

17th April 2015

The last few days have been spent on a mini expedition with Chris in the Cairngorms. We had a mix of conditions from full on wintry to roasting hot! Photography and landscapes were Chris' objective, of which he got plenty....

Off to Norway for some mountain biking work and personal skiing for next couple of weeks.

Final Winter Skills of the season

31st March 2015

It was fittingly wild day on the hill today for the final day of our final winter skills course of the season. It felt more like mid February than the end of March at points, with lots of snow being blown about creating windslab and poor visibility.

We made the most of the conditions and kicked steps up Ciste Gully, navigated over to Coire Laogh Mor, practiced some self arrests, created emergency shelters, dug Hastie pits and practiced relocation strategies.

Yesterday we enjoyed a day on Sgorr Goaith.

Rock climbing tomorrow if the roads aren't closed due to snow!

Winter Mountaineering & Winter Skills

29th March 2015

On Friday and Saturday Marina, Andrew and Chris were out with us for some winter skills and climbing. They battled some tough mountain conditions covering lots of winter skills and making an ascent of Jacob's Edge.

Our final winter skills course of the season started yesterday with a full house of six. Today conditions were much improved for their Tour de Northern Corries and Cairn Gorm.

After feeling like spring was just around the corner, conditions have returned to full on winter with temperatures well below freezing, snow and strong winds. It's looking unsettled for the first part of the week but when it calms down climbing and skiing conditions should be pretty excellent.

Winter Mountaineering, Climbing & Skills

23rd March 2015

Amazing conditions at the moment for mountaineering. Since Saturday, Russ and Charles have been out with Jon on a five day climbing and mountaineering course. So far, they've climbed the Fiachall Ridge, Jacobs Ladder, The Runnel, Spiral Gully and Goat Track Gully.

Also since the weekend, we've been delivering a winter skills course for Pure Outdoor. The skills team have been up Cairn Gorm, Lurchers and A'Chailleach developing lots of different skills.

Our final winter skills and intro ski mountaineering courses start this weekend, both with a couple of places available.

Lots of Cairngorms Sunshine

15th March 2015

The weekends weather has been glorious with lots of sunshine and warm temperatures giving the mountains a truly Alpine feel.

Yesterday we had a corporate team building event for a Dutch medical company. They competed in a large orienteering course which took them around the mountains in their teams. For many of them it was their first time in Scotland, and it was difficult not be impressed! Climbing conditions have been great this weekend too. Ian, Robert and Ian climbed Central Gully with Jon yesterday, and today we climbed Jacobs Ladder. After last weeks unsettled weather it was amazing today to be climbing in a soft shell jacket and trousers, properly Alpine! Inverness Backcountry Snowsports Club joined us for two days of winter skills for ski tourers, spending yesterday on foot in the corries and today on skis and boards looking at the essential skills needed for being indpenedent and safe in the mountains. Thanks to all those who've been out with us this weekend, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we have!

Climbing & Skiing

5th March 2015

Lee and Raphaelle's climbing course continues with Jon this week. Yesterday they took to the sharp end of winter climbing and did excellently well, leading themselves up Central Gully in the Northerm Corries. Conditions yesterday were very good for climbing and it was a beautiful day. Today, sadly, it's turned warm and is windy. The team are out practicing skills nonetheless and the forecasts is looking better from Sunday afternoon onwards.

We managed a couple hours skiing yesterday and found good, spring skiing in Lurchers Gully and skiing out from Coire an t'Sneachda.

Winter Climbing & end of Winter Skills

3rd March 2015

Yesterday saw the final day of our winter skills course for Jemma, Susan and Alistair. We had a good couple of final days with a navigation day spent on Geal Charn Mor (a mountain behind Aviemore) and very windy experience on Lurchers. The team did very well navigating and making good decisions on the mountain about what and where was safe to go.

Monday was the beginning of a five day Introduction to Winter Climbing course for Lee and Raphaelle. On Monday they climbed Aladdin's Couloir and yesterday they climbed Haston Line and Hidden Chimney.

Also out on Monday was Mark who is working towards the Winter Mountain Leader Award and wanted to brush up on some winter skills.

More Winter Skills, Mountaineering & Skiing

1st March 2015

The weather has been slightly challenging over the last couple of days for our courses that have been running. Nonetheless, all have managed to find good conditions and have had fun.

Friday saw the start of a three day intro ski course for Jamie and pals. They've had days around Cairn Gorm, Lurchers and Geal Charn, enjoying some good 'Scottish' powder on their travels. Slav was also out on Friday on an Avalanche Awareness course. There was lots of deep, fresh windslab about after the recent storms creating an ideal snowpack for dig about in.

Over the weekend a four day winter skills course started, John & Flora were out on a private ski mountaineering course and we had a one day intro to winter mountaineering course running too. Today was definitely pretty blustery at points, but it was all good training!

This coming week we have different courses running as well as a couple days left of winter skills. It looks as though it will remain cold and snowy, and the winds will begin to ease.
