Last of winter courses for 2017!
29th March 2017
Whilst the recent weather has been great and hopefully a taste of what's to come this summer(!), it hasn't been great for winter mountaineering lovers. That said, hill walking conditions have been lovely and the existing snowpack offers excellent cramponing and climbing in the easier, complete gullies.
It's been another great season for us (depsite the challenging conditions). This is because of our great clients and excellent team of guides.
The lambing snows can't be far away, but for us we're looking forward to lots of summer adventures now.
Here are a few snaps of how the last week has looked.
The end of the season?
16th Mar 2017
Of course it's not! Just as you let your guard down to welcome Spring it can be almost guarnateed winter will bite again!
The yo-yo'ing temperatures have been the continuing theme of this winter. That said, we've still managed to have some great days out as the photos show.
Thanks to all our clients who've been up for making the most of conditions, whatever they've been. As always, we've had lots of winter skills, ski touring and winter climbing teams out.
Great conditions in the 'Gorms (at last)
1st Mar 2017
After a fairly driech weekend (well done to all those who survived and kept smiling) it's turned out to be a really cracking week.
For us it's been more winter skills, winter mountaineering and ski touring. Although at times challenging, conditions have also been excellent for learning and practicing new skills on. We've had a mix of private winter skills teams, women only groups and our open courses all out making the most of it.
It feels though it'll be a late winter this year. Fingers crossed for skiing right though until May!
Lots of Winter Skills & Mountaineering
21st Feb 2017
Thanks to all the clients who've been out on courses over the last wee while. This winters conditions continue to be challenging, but we've still managed to deliver lots of courses, making the most of what we have. The weather forecast is looking wintry again, but it remains to be seen how long it will stay cold for. Here's hoping for at least a month!
Here are some snaps from winter skills, intro winter walking and guided climbig days of late.
Busy and snowy half term
14th Feb 2017
It's great that winter arrived just in time for February half term, creating the perfect winter wonderland for walkers, skiers and climbers. February half term is always busy and this year has been no exception. We will have delivered 18 different winter courses to over 70 clients be the end of the fortnight. Here are a few snaps of our climbing teams, winter skills gourps and ski tourers from the last week. Thanks to all those who've been out with us. As always, there are more regular photos of conditions posted on our Facebook page.
Winter returns to the Cairngorms (phew!)
5th Feb 2017
After what has been a fairly warm and not that snowy January, it's good to see winter taking a hold of the mountains again. This weekend the temperature has really come down and we've had lots of fresh snowfall. The forecast this week coming is looking cold and snowy too!
We made the most of the dry (sometimes wet) and warm conditions of January, delivering lots of excellent walking, climbing and mountaineering courses. We had to reschedule and cancel a number of ski touirng courses unfortunately. It's times like these we're grateful for having experienced guides with extensive local knowledge.
Here are some photos of the last week or so. Regular photos are posted on our Facebook page.
25th Jan 2017
Cold nights and warm days have given some days of late a very alpine feel. Conditions have been good for walking and mountaineering, but sadly there's a lack of snow for skiing. The forecast is looking good for the end of the month. Fingers crossed winter will hangs about a little longer this time.
Here are some photos from our mountaineering and winter skills teams who've been recently.
Winter makes a return
14th January 2017
Winter really has been like a yoyo this season so far. Last week things didn't look great and now we've got full on winter conditions with about eight inches of snow in Aviemore!
We managed a ski tour yesterday at Drumochter. It was good to be back on skis, but it was a pretty wild day with only patches of snow to link up. Today was the start of an intro ski touring course, a women only winter skills and a normal winter skills course. The skiers found fresh snow and good viz on the hills behind Aviemore andd the skills teams ventured into the Northern cories and up to Cairn Gorm. Plenty of other folks enjoying the winter conditions.
Mixed early January conditions
9th January 2017
The weather forecast is now looking wintry, which is great to see and a bit of a relief! We've had really wintry spells followed by warm weather which has stripped almost all the snow away. Nonethelss we've still managed to use good locations to deliver lots of great training. Here are some photos from winter skills, a winter walking week duo, two climbing teams, a winter mountaineering trio and some navigation training teams who've been out with us so far.
As always, these courses are only a success becuase of the skill and experience of the excellent mountain folks who work for Cairngorm Adventure Guides!
2017 off to a flying start!
4th January 2017
It's been a mixed start to winter this season with promising cold spells followed by unseasonably warm weather. Conditions have been building and improving in the mountains fortunatelty, and we've had a number of teams out enjoying themselves.
After a thaw/ freeze yesterday the snow is really firm underfoot, creating good conditions for our two winter skills, two winter climbing and winter walking week courses who are out.
Most teams have been in and around the northern corries of the Cairngorms, but Ross and hill walking team ascended Ben Nevis today.
Here are a few photos of the teams and how conditions look.
