Turning very cold..... #winterskills #skitouring #winterclimbing #wintermountaineering

25th February 2018

The run of great winter weather has continued. It's been cold last week, and very windy at times, but it looks as though we're in for a really cold period this coming week, even to low levels!

After a mild thaw earlier in the week, the snowpack refroze and has since offered some excellent conditions for walking and climbing, as well as ski touring where it has softened in the sun.

The February half term holidays are now over which will make the Northern Cairngorms that little bit quieter until Easter in just over a month. It's an ideal time for getting out and enjoying the great mountain condiitons.

These are a selection of photos showing off the conditons on our intro winter mountaineering, introduction to ski touring and winter skills courses that have all been going on. Enjoy.

Winter courses

We had a really fantastic experience with Cairngorm Adventure Guides! Liam, who helped us organise our trip, was flexible, friendly and answered all our questions. Our guides Rich (3 days) and Gill (1 day) were amazing guides, extremely knowledgeable and just all round lovely people. Pros: All technical gear (except boots) are included in the price making things easy and inexpensive if you don’t own technical equipment. The course itself is very flexible (especially if with friend/partner) as the guiding ratio of 2:1 means the course can cater to you whether you are new to mountaineering or experienced. Have I mentioned how fantastic the guides were!? Both our guides were incredibly knowledgeable and shared their expertise to teach us about reading the conditions, avalanche risk, and kit management, all whilst being out in the mountains! We felt safe at all times and our guides were excellent at finding our comfort levels and making sure we safely pushed our boundaries. Cons: None!!!!! For beginning or improving your climbing/ mountaineering skills, I would 100% recommend these guys. I am actually in the process of trying to get back out with Cairngorms adventure guides and I only returned from my previous trip with them trip 3 days ago! Thanks Rich, Gill and Liam!
