Turning very cold..... #winterskills #skitouring #winterclimbing #wintermountaineering

25th February 2018

The run of great winter weather has continued. It's been cold last week, and very windy at times, but it looks as though we're in for a really cold period this coming week, even to low levels!

After a mild thaw earlier in the week, the snowpack refroze and has since offered some excellent conditions for walking and climbing, as well as ski touring where it has softened in the sun.

The February half term holidays are now over which will make the Northern Cairngorms that little bit quieter until Easter in just over a month. It's an ideal time for getting out and enjoying the great mountain condiitons.

These are a selection of photos showing off the conditons on our intro winter mountaineering, introduction to ski touring and winter skills courses that have all been going on. Enjoy.

Winter courses

We went on the 2 day Intro to Winter Mountaineering course and couldn't praise it highly enough! Dave was an incredible instructor - friendly, patient and super familiar with all the mountain terrain near Aviemore. We recapped our basic winter skills before progressing onto ropework, belaying and steeper routes. We became more independent the second day, leading the routes with Dave's guidance. Dave was more than happy to tailor the course to our level and needs, allowing us to push ourselves whilst always feeling safe. There are loads of outdoor guides and courses in the Cairngorms, but having now done two courses with Cairngorm Adventure Guides we would recommend them to everyone!
