Recommended Equipment List 

When doing any adventure sport it is important to have the appropriate kit for your own enjoyment, safety and for the safety of others around you. During winter, conditions are even less forgiving and having the correct equipment is of paramount importance. We have created kit lists as detailed below, please get in touch if you have any questions.

Please take a BUFF with you for all courses this winter season. They act as fantastic face coverings on the hill and will be essential PPE during your course with us.  Please also take a personal emergency survival bag/ blizzard bag with you. 

Summer Mountaineering

  • Waterproof jacket & trousers
  • Waterproof hill walking boots
  • Windstopper/ fleece
  • Hat & gloves
  • Spare warm layer
  • 30ltr rucksack with liner
  • Walking poles
  • Rock shoes (for those attending rock climbing courses)
  • Lunch and drinks

Winter Walking & Mountaineering 

  • Waterproof jacket & trousers
  • Stiff mountaineering boots - B2 or B3 boots (available for hire from Cairngorm Mountain Sports - 01479 810903)
  • Gaiters 
  • Power stretch/ windstopper/ warm trousers
  • Thermal base layer
  • Windstopper/ soft shell/ fleece mid layer jacket
  • Spare warm jacket
  • Hat (+ spare)
  • Waterproof gloves (+ spare)
  • Ski goggles
  • 30 - 40ltr rucksack with waterproof liner
  • Thermal flask
  • Compass & map case
  • Mountaineering axe (we can provide)
  • Mountaineering crampons (we can provide)
  • Climbing helmet (we can provide)
  • Climbing harness (for those attending mountaineering courses only - we can provide)
  • Snow shovel (not essential, but if you have one bring it along)
  • Walking poles (not essential, but they can help with balance and on descent)
  • Compass (if you have one)
  • Head torch
  • Lunch & drinks
  • Personal emergency survival/ blizzard bag
  • BUFF/ hill appropriate face covering

Winter Climbing

All as above, but with;

  • 2 technical ice axes (we can provide but bring your own if possible)
  • Crampons (we can provide)
  • Climbing harness with 8ft/ 120cm Sling & 2no HMS karabiners (we can provide but bring your own if possible)

Ski Touring

All technical equipment is available for hire from Ellis Brighams (01479 810175 - aviemore@ellis-brigham.com).

Please get in touch with them in advance with your shoe size, weight and height, and let them know you are one one of our courses.

Canoeing

We can provide canoes, paddles, buoyancy aids and dry bags, but you'll need:

  • Sunglasses & suncream (hopefully!)
