Winter draws to a close #winterskills #skitouring #scottishskitouring

It was always going to return, wasn't it! Looking over the photos from the last few weeks it has been a good month. We've had plenty of winter skills, ski touring and climbing teams out making the most of the late season conditions. Being flexible has been key, as well as keeping an open and honest dialogue with people who are coming on our courses. It's been great to hear people have still  enjoyed themselves and learned lots on our cousres.

There's no doubt that the warm spell in February has limited options and has made the snow pack more vunerable. Nonetheless, it's good to have made the most of it and still to have something to go at for another week or so.

Another observation of the photos this season is orange and red were the jacket colours of choice!

Winter courses

The course was a great introduction to winter walking in Scotland. We were a group of 6 plus Liam our guide. On the first day we spent a few hours in the youth hostel covering theory, kit and issues such as avalanche risk before heading towards Cairgorm to practice arrests, navigation and techniques for walking in snow with and without crampons. The second day was a mountain journey which took us to the summit of Cairngorm practicing our winter skills en route and in an area of more plentiful snow to the south of the mountain. The course was very well organised and enjoyable. Liam was the ideal guide - friendly, knowledgable and unflappable.
