Wintry conditions in the Cairngorms #winterskills #winterclimbing #wintermountaineering

4th March 2019

It's been great to see snow building on the mountains again. After a warm February it felt as though it was all over, but it's remarkable how quicly it can start to improve.

Over the weekend we had lots of people on winter skills courses (28no!) as well as a winter climbing duo out. When conditions are lean but it's a wintry forecast, delivering good quality winter training courses is challenging. Having a strong team like we do, is essential.

The forecats continues to be cold and snowy. We have limited availability on our advanced winter skills, intro ski touring and winter walking weeks. Please get in touch if you would like to join us.

Winter courses

Fantastic value for money, excellent course I did a Winter Skills two-day weekend course in early February 2019. It was excellent, very well organised and super value for money. There were 4 of us on the course with one instructor so we got very specific and personalised feedback throughout. We covered all of the key skills, including navigation techniques, ice axe arrests, walking in different types and gradients of snow, using crampons, identifying snow conditions and potential dangers. Laurie was a great guide, very patient, extremely knowledgeable and experienced. The course included an hour of 'classroom' learning before we got into the mountains and minibus transfer to and from the mountains each day. I feel confident about going into the mountains in winter now, fully equipped with the necessary skills and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the course and Cairngorm Adventure Guides.
