Blue Skies and Sunshine (winter skills & winter mountaineers)

7th January 2018

Lots and lots of people out enjoying the sunshine today and making the most of the last day of holidays.

Our busy winter continues with numerous winter skills and a couple of mountaineering teams out. The teams have had a good mix of weather this weekend with poor visibilty, windy and cold conditions yesterday and wall to wall sunshine today (can't imagine which they prefer).

There's good snow cover at the moment although care is needed for ski touring to avoid rocks, and there's a moderate avalanche risk on all aspects above 900m's for climbers and skiers to consider.

The coming week's forecast continues to look good and wintry.

A must do if visiting Aviemore My wife and i wanted to hike up' 'Ben Macdui' Scotlands second highest mountain. We contacted 'Cairngorm adventure guides' who were brilliant, easy to deal with, professional and promt. Our guide Emma didn't just get us to the summit but gave us lot's of local information on the area, and on hiking in the mountains in general. The walk is a couple of hours (we're 58 & 60 years old) with a few stops to take in the the stunning scenery and take photo's. As well as being constantly informative, Emma was also professional and considerate, offering us options for various descents, given the weather conditions and time. The weather changed, as would be expected, in the Scottish highlands, constantly, this only enhanced the overall experience and satisfaction of completing the hike. All in all, if you're looking for a memorable experience in the Scottish highlands, DO THIS!
